2009 has come to an end and its time to take a peak back at the Top 5 Zombie movies of 2009. There were lots of great zombie movies released and I tried to catch as many of them as I could and some were fantastic.. some not so much. So here are the 5 Zombie films from 2009 that every zombie fan should consider checking out. From true blue horror to action comedies and thrillers it was a good year for zombie flicks. Here are the 5 best ones in no particular order.

Pontypool: Pontypool is a zombie film about a local town that is over run by a unique infection that is turning the local town folk into flesh tearing mindless zombies. The film is based around a radio station and a DJ who is on the air during the outbreak. Shot with a small set of a radio station the film plays out like a stage play with the emphasis on dialogue and characters with a nice mix of action as well. The film is comparable to George Romeros Day of the Dead although not quite as fast paced. Pontypool is a thinking mans ( or womans ) zombie film with great dialogue, characters that you will believe and a story that is truly unique. An indie canadian production which is easily one of the best zombie films of 2009.

Dead Girl: Dead Girl is a very unique zombie film in that you never really know what it is that plagues the main woman in the film other then she is clearly dead and not well. The film is highly disturbing as a group of young men decide to make the girl they find in an abandoned building their new 'play thing' with some very disturbing sexual and physical violence. Dead Girl will turn your stomach but its strong writing and deep moral message will have you transfixed. Plenty of gore, great writing and lots of deep thinking makes Dead Girl one of the most disturbing and well written undead films of 2009.

Carriers: Carriers was really done wrong by in the theaters since it was only released into a very limited area and buying it on DVD wasnt much easier for me. Carriers is not a true blue zombie film its more like 28 Days Later where it focuses on an outbreak that turns people into a rotting corpse. They dont eat brains and you hardly see any infected people at all so Carriers is more apocalyptic thriller but since it uses the infection angle its still a great film that if you REALLY grasp can be tossed into the zombie genre. Shot with a limited core group of characters this plague thriller is easily one of the best written plague films in the last 10 years. Although not as action packed or fast paced as 28 Days Later Carriers is a superior film because of its writing casting and overall story. A really great experience for film fans who dont mind their flicks a bit wordy and more about the human element and less about the action.

Dead Snow: Nazis, zombies, medical students in the mountains and lots of carnage are the key points of Dead Snow. A foreign zombie film its a real treat that is a throw back to classic films like Evil Dead. I have said it before but if Sam Raimi had made a zombie film instead of Evil Dead, Dead Snow would be it. Although the writing is a bit weak at times and the laughs a bit hollow it has enough laughs, enough gore and enough good scenes to make it a must see. Dead Snow made alot of Top horror films lists and I am not surprised.

Zombieland: Last and not least comes Zombieland easily one of the best zombie films to come out of hollywood EVER. Its tongue in cheek writing, dark humor and '32 rules of Zombieland' made this movie the must see movie of 2009. It appeals to die hard zombie fans with its rules and also pleases mainstream fans with enough laughs and action to keep everyone interested. What makes Zombieland such a great film is the fact that the folks who wrote it and worked on the film have a clear knowledge of the genre and a passion to deliver an excellent film for the fans. I can not say enough about how much fun Zombieland was and I am very excited for Zombieland 2 which is in the works.

So there you have it 5 Zombie Films from 2009 that are what I consider some of the best. Whats on your list?
