I was extremely excited when I first heard about Carriers and I was equally dissapointed when it was without any ceremony dumped into about 20 theaters world wide and then even more un-ceremoniously dumped onto DVD. To say it was a challenge to find this movie in stores would be an understatement. HMV didnt have it and even my tried and trusted outlet Cinema 1 did not have it. Even sadder the clerk had no idea what movie I was talking about. After much hunting I found it in a previously viewed pile and thank goodness I did. Carriers is a deep and intelligent contagion movie that although its not a true zombie film will appeal to higher thinking zombie film fans!

In Carriers a deadly virus has spread across the globe. Contagion is everywhere, no one is safe and no one can be trusted. Four young attractive people race through the back roads of the American West to the pounding beat of a vacation soundtrack. Their aim is to retreat to secluded utopian beach in the Gulf of Mexico, where they could peacefully wait out the pandemic and survive the apocalyptic disease.

CARRIERS follow their getaway through a surreal and dangerous world where laws and rules no longer apply. Their plans takes a grim turn when their car breaks down on an isolated road starting a chain of events that will seal the fate of each of them in an inexorable and horrifying voyage of hell through a western landscape populated by only the hideous dead or the twisted living. Their desperate retreat south turns into a deadly battle against infected children, homicidal doctors, crazed survivalists, rabid dogs, and, finally each other. The virus is the least of their problems as horrible choices must be made in the face of lost humanity.

Carriers is a truly fantastic film but unfortunately its neither a horror movie or really a thriller. It is probably best described as a drama about human tragedy and survival and that really makes it tough for this movie to really find its audience. Very well written and shot Carriers is without a doubt one of the best apocalyptic films produced in many years and will definitely appeal to more diverse film fans who can appreciate a movie that is about human tragedy and survival more then action, scares or gore. Carriers draws you in and really connects you with its characters as they attempt to survive an apocalyptic plague event only to quickly see that the plague is not the only thing they need to survive and that sometimes.. dieing is better then surviving.

Carriers is not scary but it is deep, dark and though provoking with some excellent scenes and overall it is one of my favorite apocalyptic films now with lots of rewatch potential. The closest comparison would be that Carriers is a tighter and darker take on The Stand with the emphasis not on the outbreak or society as a whole but rather the 4 survivors trying to escape it! A great film that will not appeal to mainstream horror audiences but if you like films about human tragedy and a man made apocalypse this is the gem for you. 9 out of 10!
