The sign you just loved a zombie film that you just saw in theaters is when you get home and cant wait to pop in your favorite zombie game for Xbox360 ( in my case Dead Rising ) to crush some undead and wreak havok! I just saw Zombieland and let me say its one of the most impressive and intelligent zombie films I have seen in years. It is also the first film I have seen that does not try to pay hommage or lift from George Romero's work. Its a zombie film, the outbreak is unique, the angle is fun and its an all around kick ass good time!
This despite a director who should have failed miserably doing it. Diablo Cody the it girl of Hollywood failed with Jennifers Body miserably but Ruben Fleisher who is only really known for working on Jimmy Kimmel and the horrible MTV reality show Rob and Big has hit pay dirt with zombie fans. Zombieland is nothing short of genius. It is clear that the production team who made Zombieland understand and love the genre. The zombieland rules say it all for us die hard fans!
In Zombieland Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg) has made a habit of running from what scares him. Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson) doesnt have fears. If he did, hed kick their ever-living ass. In a world overrun by zombies, these two are perfectly evolved survivors. But now, theyre about to stare down the most terrifying prospect of all: each other.
Zombieland is getting buzz as the American answer to Shaun of the Dead but lets be honest for a minute. Zombieland is no such thing. Shaun of the Dead is a genius zombie comedy that is full of laughs and low brow humor. Zombieland is dry, witty, dark and damn funny but its also quite high brow at points. Its a zombie film for all ages. The younger crowds will laugh at the carnage and the one liners while the older more refined fans who like the classics will chuckle at the Rules of Zombieland and the less obvious zombie humor for die hard fans laced throughout the film.
Zombieland is the first truly creative and intelligent horror film to come out of Hollywood in a very long time and its basically how I would envision a Zombie film if Kevin Smith directed it and Woody Harrelson starred. Only Kevin Smith did not direct it but yeah Woody Harrelson does star. Well worth the price of admission and definitely worthy of all zombie fans time! 8.5/10
